The knotted carpet is obtained connecting and fixing to a
base support spin courts that, fuoriuscendo on one side, form one
layer folto, commonly said " hair " of the carpet. The
carrying structure is formed in fact from a series of horizontal wires
(the weft) interlaced with vertical wires (the warp), on which the
colorful wire becomes knotted that forms the design gradually.
The more and more disseminated material from for the knotting
is the sheep wool, and moreover the silk, oltreché, more very rarely,
the hair of goat or camel. The cotton instead is adapted to form the
woven one of base, replaced from the silk for those carpets whose
working demands one particularly driven in knotting.
In order to hold in tension the wires of weft and warp during
the webbing, devices much several for ages and places were used: from
the primitivi sticks supported from pegs, until the great fixed
chassis, to which many annodatori could work one next to the other.
This working manual, similar still today to that one of many
centuries ago, entrusted to the irripetibile gesture of the single
craftsman, renders every carpet a piece only similar to others of one
same type, but never identical.
According to the way in which the wires of the hair they come
connected to the weft, two are distinguished arrange of knotting: in
the so-called node ghiordes (from the name of a
village of the Anatolia) the wool wire comes every made time to pass
on of two spins adjacent of the warp, alternating a interspazio empty
to one full, and forming therefore on the back small and regular
costoline; in the node senneh (from the name of a
village of the western Persia), instead, the wool wire comes made to
pass under a single wire of the warp and then connected to the second:
the back appears extremely regular and the knotting turns out more
driven in.
The consistency, and therefore the quality and the value of a
carpet, are given exactly from the density of the nodes, calculated to
the square decimeter of surface. The values limit are between the 500
nodes of the quality carpets more current, to beyond the 10,000 nodes
of the carpets of silk of the sixteenth and Diciasettesimo century.
In spite of progressive mechanization in all the fields of
the contemporary life, the carpet oriental has resistito to lays a
trap of the mechanical chassis and its working is remained almost
invariata in the centuries.
